Do you have 32 degrees of courage and a whacky costume to boot? Since 1996, thousands of brave souls have donned their February best and jumped into icy Vermont lakes to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics Vermont, providing year-round sports training and athletic competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Will they run frantically and get it over with quickly, or wade cautiously and postpone the inevitable? Plungers receive warm tokens of appreciation for their efforts and bravery, including a winter hat and a towel as they exit the water. Other plunges occur earlier in the month in North Bennington (Feb. 1) and Burlington (Feb. 8), Vermont. Participant registration fee $25 with additional fundraising minimums, www.penguinplunge.org, 802-863-5222.
