Lobbying and Government Affairs

Overview

The Vermont Chamber of Commerce has a powerful voice at the Vermont State House, where we represent the interests of the Vermont business community.

The Chamber promotes policies that are good for the economy and the community of employers we represent. To accomplish these objectives, we focus on lobbying, fostering member-legislator relationships, and publications to help keep members informed of legislative issues.

The Chamber has a lobbying team. Areas of interest to Vermont businesses include: labor, tax, health care, economic development, environmental regulation, electric restructuring, appropriations for tourism promotion, and regulatory matters.

Legislative Affairs Publications

Legislators also need to hear directly from the Chamber's members. In order to encourage Chamber members to contact their legislators with their concerns, the Chamber publishes the Legislative Handbook, a resource book of Vermont legislators; a weekly Legislative Update during the legislative session, and a Legislative Report Card released after the legislative session that grades legislators on the basis of how they voted on the issues.

The Legislative Update is available by email to Vermont Chamber members only. If you are a Vermont Chamber member and you would like to receive the Legislative Update, please contact Karen Foote (802-223-3443, kfoote@vtchamber.com).

The Legislative Handbook is available to the general public, in hard copy only. If you would like to order the Legislative Handbook, please contact Michael Belyea (802-223-3443, mbelyea@vtchamber.com).

Governor Jim Douglas's State of the State Address

Thursday, January 10, 2008
Mr. President, Madam Speaker, Members of the General Assembly, my fellow Vermonters:
As 2008 opens, the hope of a new year - of a new beginning - unfolds before us, touching the horizon of a new generation. For centuries, our people have been held by a faith in tomorrow, by the glory of God's gift: the promise of Vermont. <More>
